2022 Moto Razr gets big price drop, 144Hz screen, flagship SoC

Lenovo’s Motorola division has not abandoned the recent reboot of the Motorola Razr.

Last night, the company announcedMoto Razr 2022The good news is that there’s been a significant price drop this year: the phone is now CNY 5,999, or about $900. Previous Razr reboots in the $1,400 range, and the next generation The second version was actually More expensive (~$1,830) in China compared to the US.

The indoor display gets a major upgrade with this version; It’s now a 144Hz, 2400 x 1080, 6.67″ OLED display. This display is powered by the ultra-fast Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. This is another huge upgrade for the Razr because the previous version had a mid-range chip. The phone has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, 3500mAh battery and 33W charging. That’s a lot of upgrades compared to the more expensive mid-range 2nd generation version. If Motorola wants to compete with $1,000 Samsung Galaxy Z Flipalthough – from which this phone seems to borrow a lot – these changes were necessary.

The design is new – looks less like a Razr and more like a Samsung Galaxy Flip. Previous versions emulated the original Razr with a large chin that was as thick as an entire phone when folded. The new Razr offers a completely flat interior screen space when open. That big chin on older Razrs made gesture navigation difficult, which requires swiping up from the bottom of the screen, so this change is a step in the right direction. It seems that there is still a raised perimeter around the edge of the screen, however, performing all the “swipe in” navigation gestures will not be so easy as on a regular smartphone.

Zoom / This is very different from the previous two phones. The notch and chin are gone, and it basically looks like the Galaxy Z Flip.

Another Razr oddity that has been knocked out is top notch. The two previous phones had a large trapezoidal notch at the top for the earpiece and front camera. Razr now has a more natural pinhole camera. The top and bottom edges of the phone’s screen still don’t look straight, but the odd non-rectangular shape has been greatly toned down. Regular Android phone screens are rectangular because that’s what the OS was designed for, but previous Razrs had wild display shapes, with curved top and bottom edges that aren’t parallel. It looks like it has been reduced this year, but the screen is still a bit circular, and Android will have to compensate with a larger status bar and navigation bar.

The 2.7-inch, 800 x 573 OLED external display is still useful for notifications and custom widgets like the clock and media player. Next to the external display are two “rear” cameras, a 50-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera.

This is Moto Razr’s third foldable phone, and it’s been a turbulent product line since its inception. There are no foldable smartphones for a very durable company. When the original Moto Razr was launched in 2020, Multiple reports Display problems appear quickly review unit It was broken almost as soon as it was folded, and the touchscreen was unusable after the first day. a second generation razr also It arrived in 2020, just seven months after the first one. Motorola was very concerned about the hardware failure during charging Edit chests Last minute be warned that your “new” device may arrive folded and with fingerprints on it. Even Samsung, the leader in foldable displays, has yet to solve foldable durability.

There is no word on this phone being released internationally. Many companies are only shipping foldable smartphones in their home market of China, just because the technology is immature and prone to failure. It wouldn’t be surprising if Motorola took a similar path. In China, the phone ships on August 15th.
