long island — The driver was sentenced Wednesday in a hit-and-run accident that killed rapper Nicki Minaj’s father last year, in keeping with a promise made by a judge when he pleaded guilty in May.
Charles Bolevich, who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene and tampering with evidence in the Long Island, New York, plane crash that killed Robert Marage, was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and have his driver’s license suspended for six months.
Bolevich’s attorney, Mark Jean, indicated that his client may have had a medical problem at the time of the accident and that he was not fully aware of what happened when he escaped.
Bolevich, 72, said in court that he was “heartbroken since he realized the scale of the tragedy” and that there was “no excuse” for his behavior.
Meadow’s widow, Carol Maraj, said in court that Bolivitch left her husband “like a dog in the street” and that his release from a longer prison sentence was “a slap in the face for the family,” Newsday reported.
Bolivitch hit Maraj, 64, while Maraj was walking along Roslin Road in Mineola in February 2021. Prosecutors said Bolivitch stopped briefly to ask Maraj if he was OK, but did not seek help.
Instead, Bolevich went home, parked the car — a white 1992 Volvo — in his garage and covered it with a tarp, prosecutors said. Maraj was taken to hospital and pronounced dead the next day.
Prosecutors sought a prison sentence of between one and three years, but Nassau County Judge Howard Storm said in May, when Bolevich pleaded guilty, that he would not be sentenced to “more than one year.”
“Given the seriousness of the accused’s conduct,” said Brendan Bruch, a spokesman for the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors felt the tougher sentence was warranted.
“We continue to offer our condolences to the family of Robert Marage,” Brusch said.
Jan requested a 90-day prison sentence, arguing that other factors beyond Bolivić’s control were partly responsible for the accident, including road construction, street lights that were not working and Maraj’s physical condition.
Maraj’s widow, Carol Maraj, is suing Bolivitch over the accident.
Bolivich, who had been splitting time between Long Island and Guam, where he ran an excavation and water purification business, surrendered to police a few days after the incident.
Investigators said they used surveillance video footage to trace the Volvo involved in the accident to Bolivich Minola’s home.
Nicki Minaj, rapper of “Anaconda”, “Super Bass” and other platinum-nominated Grammy-nominated songs, Onika Tanya Maraj was born in Trinidad and raised in Queens.
In a post on her website, Minaj, 39, described her father’s death as “the most devastating loss of my life.”
