Jimmy Garoppolo carted off as the 49ers fall to Chiefs in Week 3

BOX SCORE

The 49ers on Sunday potentially lost more than just a game, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was carted off late in the fourth quarter of a 38-27 defeat in Kansas City.

Injuries and penalties were once again the theme of the game for the 49ers. They racked up almost 150 penalty yards on the day. They also suffered some major injuries. Richard Sherman, Adrian Colbert, and Garoppolo were the big names the 49ers lost. They also had some scares with Reuben Foster, Solomon Thomas, Mike Person, and both running backs.

The 49ers dug themselves into an early hole by allowing the Chiefs to score a touchdown on five straight drives. They gave up three passing touchdowns and two Kareem Hunt rushing touchdowns. The score going into the half was 35-7, and the 49ers appeared dead in the water.

It was a different story in the second half, as the 49ers we able to hold the Chiefs to zero points in the third quarter, while scoring 14 of their own.

The 49ers looked good in the second half, and almost were able to complete a miraculous comeback.

Down 14, the 49ers drove deep into Chiefs’ territory looking to come within one score. On 3rd and goal, Garoppolo scrambled left, trying to get as many yards as possible. He collided with Chiefs’ DB Steve Nelson, and appeared to injure his knee. Garropolo would later be carted off to the locker room and ruled out of the game (left knee).

Shanahan and the 49ers fear an ACL tear.

Backup C.J. Beathard would replace him on fourth down, and seemingly throw a touchdown to tight end George Kittle. The play, like many others, would be called back by a controversial pass interference call on Kyle Juszczyk. The 49ers would end up settling for a field goal, which turned out to be the last time they touched the ball.

Despite all the things to talk about from this game, it will be overshadowed by Garoppolo’s injury. Stay tuned for more information.
