Sony and Honda plan to form a new company to design and sell electric cars together. The project has not yet been completed, but the two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding stating their intent. The new, as-yet-unnamed company is expected to form this year, with sales of the first EV model planned for 2025.
Honda will manufacture the first model, with the new company handing over the vehicle’s design, development and sales, and Sony developing the mobility service platform. The partnership aims to combine Honda’s automotive expertise and marketing with Sony’s capabilities in image sensors, communications and entertainment.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida says: statment. “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automotive industry over many years and continues to make revolutionary breakthroughs in the field, we intend to build on our vision of “making mobility space an emotional space,” and contribute to the evolution of centered mobility. About safety, entertainment, and adaptability.”
“The new company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution and expansion in mobility around the world, through a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds customer expectations and imaginations,” said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe. “We will do this by utilizing Honda’s latest technology and know-how regarding environment and safety, while aligning both companies’ technological assets. Although Sony and Honda share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of technology expertise are very different. So I believe that this alliance that brings the strengths of our two companies together offers great potential for the future of mobility.”
Sony has indicated its intentions to enter the automotive world for a while, but this marks its first concrete move into the commercial industry. At CES 2020, Sony demonstrated an electric concept car called the Vision-S, and followed it up at CES 2022 with the Vision-S 02. At the time, Sony announced plans to create an operating company called Sony Mobility by spring 2022; Honda’s new partnership seems to have brought this idea into question.
