“We’re definitely, right now, in this country, out of the epidemic phase,” Fowzie told PBS NewsHour Tuesday.
“I mean, we do not have 900,000 new infections a day and tens of thousands and tens of thousands of hospitals and thousands of deaths. We are at a low level now. So you say we’re out of the epidemic. Build in this country? We are,” he said.
Covid-19 cases in the United States have dropped significantly in the past two months as the Omigron wave has receded.
But the daily cases are more than twice as high as last summer.
New cases are on the rise again in most states, and the number of hospital admissions has begun to rise over the past week.
Fewer people are now dying of Govt-19 than most epidemics, but with more than 400 deaths a day, the last two months of Govt-19 are far more dangerous than the recent flu season.
Fauci said that even if the corona virus is not eradicated, the level of the virus in the community can be kept very low if vaccinated regularly every year.
Currently, local health officials across the United States are still working to fully vaccinate and encourage more people against Covit-19.
The Covit-19 situation in the United States does not necessarily reflect what is happening in other parts of the world, Fassi noted.
“The epidemic is a widespread, worldwide epidemic that is spreading rapidly among the population,” Fawzi said. “So, if you look at the global situation, there is no doubt that this epidemic is still going on.”
Lori Tremmel Freeman, chief executive of the National County and City Health Officers, said Wednesday that getting out of the epidemic was not the language heard in conversations within local health departments.
But there has been a subtle shift in the ground, with local health officials now focusing on non-Govt areas such as maternal health, childhood immunizations, tuberculosis, HIV and other public health concerns.
“I think subtle changes are being made in the health sector at the local level to normalize the epidemic response, which allows them to return to the core functions of their public health departments,” Freeman said. “But those words that were used about the end of the epidemic are now not properly distributed in the public health area.”
